Floyd Mayweather Jr. Released From Jail [Boxing]
Floyd Mayweather Jr., the highest paid athlete in sports was released early this morning in Las Vegas after serving for 63 days of his 87 day sentence. Reports say the he immediately went back to his humble abode and met with friends and family.
Among them was Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent, who recently started The Money Team (TMT) Promotions. As I’ve stated before, TMT is licensed in New York and Nevada. They have created a great group of fighters so far featuring names such as Zab Judah, Andre Berto, and Yuriorkis Gamboa. The biggest news may be coming soon.
If Floyd Mayweather Jr. becomes a fighter in TMT Promotions, which everyone is expecting him to, then it creates a lot of new opportunities. TMT Promotions now holds the best cards when dealing with HBO and Showtime. Golden Boy loses power as they lose the best fighter, who only joined Golden Boy because Top Rank pissed him off. We’ll see if Top Rank just has problems with Golden Boy or if they are holding back on joint-promoted fights because they don’t make as much money.
The next thing on my mind is if Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to fight again this year. He complained during the first month of his jail sentence that the time spent could have permanent effects on his fighting career as he wasn’t able to eat or drink enough, essentially ruining his conditioning. If he is still in good shape a November fight is possible. The Manny Pacquiao pipe dream mega-fight may be more realistic now, but is still not likely. If the Pacquiao fight is going to happen next year, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will probably need to fight once this year and once in the spring next year before fighting Pacquiao in the fall.
I’m just hoping for Floyd Mayweather Jr. do to press interviews and hopefully get in fights with people on ESPN. /fingers crossed
