It Came From (Sunday) Night… Dexter “Those Kind of Things” Review
Dexter has finally returned from its roughly 10 month hiatus, and it couldn’t have come at a better time (right as many of the summer shows are coming to and end and TV watchers are slowly delving into the scramble mode of finding a new show to watch). I will review the show much more in depth below, but the short version of the review of the pilot episode of the 6th season; Dexter is back and this season looks like it is going to work on all cylinders for those who are fans of the show. I found that from the pilot, this season is going to be a very interesting one that looks to be one of the best after season 4 (my favorite by far).
Without ruining much, I will say that all of the characters you love return in the roles that you fell in love with them with. Debra is still the foul-mouthed but loving sister, Angel is back in potentially a much larger role than previous seasons, and of course Vince is back with his incredibly dirty mind and jokes. Chance are if you have seen the first 5 seasons (and if you haven’t, I seriously suggest you do, as Dexter is one of the best television shows that is currently running), you know what Dexter himself is like, and the first episode delivers full-blown Dexter that we know and love. I wont ruin it for those who are waiting to watch, but it also seems like Dexter may be doing a different type of balancing act in addition to balancing being a serial killer and working for the MPD. The potential for this to go far is very high, and I can’t wait to see the things that the producers decide to do.
Another thing that sets Dexter apart is that in addition to the killing that he does, there is often another large case that Dexter finds himself working. Whether it was the Ice Truck Killer or the Trinity Killer, these large-scale villains have always been very sadistic and this season looks to continue this tradition. I’m not going to say who it is, but one of the “main bad guys” this season may be someone that you recognize, and getting the good actors and people who have experience under their belt has always worked well for Dexter (I’m looking at you John Lithgow and Julia Stiles). I wont say whom he/she/or they are, but the killer(s) is/are into some pretty messed up stuff, so I can’t wait to see how this season will treat he/she/them.
Overall, this was an absolutely amazing episode. After some pretty disappointing season finales in True Blood and Weeds, it is good to come back into some of my favorite shows with a very strong start. For those who are fans of the show, I personally think that this episode could not have been any better.
